My first hunting trip

James (my partner for a few years) was taking me to pick up my first bad guy. This man was a convicted felon who had skipped his bail. He was being brought up on charges in relation to the death of a policeman. We had reliable information from a family member of his current location. After a quick stop at James's brother's office, we were on our way to the fugitive's mother's house. I received my simple instructions. This, being my first hunting trip, was going to be fairly easy for me. I was just bait. All I had to do was get out of the car two blocks down. Be subtle. Be drunk. James will take care of the rest. "Trust me" he says. I read in the file that this guy was violent. Anytime, anywhere. He was maced in a courtroom once.

I look at his picture and stats. He's big. He's ugly. He was hit a lot. He takes as well as he gives.

I get out of the car and walk/stagger the two blocks. I get to the mother's home. and I lean on the mailbox. hard. A voice comes from out of the dark screen door and tells me to get the fuck away. Startled (no shit - I didn't see anybody) I lean a little harder and down comes the mailbox. I am hoping that James is ready to come to my rescue because this big son-of-a-bitch is charging me. Its our guy. He's mad. I'm tangled up in the mailbox. I don't have a gun. James was afraid I get scared and use it. He was right. If I had had it, I would have used it. I was terrified. The guy was 30 feet and closing fast. I don't remember at what point James stepped from the side of the house, But I was glad to see him firing a pistol. Our guy had a look of shock and then he fell. hard. James shot him with a tranquilizer dart. That was what he had gotten from his brother. The dart was way stronger than what we needed, but James didn't want to take any chances. I was relieved to hear that. Our fugitive had collapsed about 5 feet from me. James claimed that was part of his plan so we wouldn't have to drag his heavy ass far to get him in the car. We thanked his Mother for the tip and stuffed the trophy in the car. Of course, since that wasn't exactly legal and our boy was still out, we had to drive around for about 4 hours until our sleepy passenger woke up all sick feeling. He didn't have much fight in him as we dropped him off at the sheriff's office.

I trusted James with my life from that day on. I also told him if He did anything so god damned stupid again, I would skin him myself.

A quick note

19:34 Oct 29 2005

I feel its important to mention at the beginning of these stories that the job of hunting humans is very dangerous. Without proper guidance and training you will get injured or killed. It's a numbers game. Sooner or later, you will make a mistake and the price for that mistake is very high. Training will move the numbers in your favor, but there are always those damn unknown variables.

I have a degree in Criminial Justice, I apprenticed for two years with a skip tracing firm, I learned how to fight with a US Army, Special Forces Green Beret teacher for couple of years, I learned other techniques by training and sparring with a retired US Navy SEAL for many years. You will note that I didn't study any specific martial art. I know how to fight. I can injure or kill with a single strike. I know how to adapt to a situation and use it to my advantage. If I sound arrogent about my abilities, it's because I've paid my dues and earned the right. I will do my best to tell these stories as close to the truth as possible. I will change names and locales to prevent any hassles with pending court cases and other legal crap. Some of the stories are quite horrific in nature and if these types of stories bother you, you may not want to read on.
